I was almost exclusively a Kodiak dipper. Occasionally, when I was on what I thought was a "healthy" kick, I would buy Swedish "snus" by the brand-name of "skruf." The Swedish snus was very different from US stuff -- "skruf" brand in particular has the consistency of mud, it's so finely ground . . . and it's mixed with bergamot (the flavoring in Earl Grey tea) and rose oil, so it's a little bit like sucking on a wad of furniture polish. Why I Quit: I would prefer to die (when that day comes) with my lower jaw intact. Plus, I was tired of being a slave to a can of poison.

My daughter recently started asking lots of questions about what it was and why I did it. My son also thought it was cool to spit 'cause I was spitting. I figured it was high time to end this longstanding relationship and simply said, "Today I stop this shit!". One day, I just started thinking about dip and dipping. Thinking about it was something that I had always been good at avoiding. I had 2 cans in my possesion and estimated that they would last me until Monday January 23, 2006. I was almost right. Man did I stretch out that last Sunday night dip...It lasted for hours. Anyway, the Friday night before my quit date, we (my family) were sitting down at dinner. After dinner, as we sat and talked, I told them that I had something to tell them. (That part was really hard. I knew I had to verbalize it to them. It was the first public swipe I took at the Nic Demon). I reached into my back pocket (a habit that does finally go away!!!) and pulled out my can of mint Skoal long cut. I held it up and said, "This is my last can. When this is gone, I quit". My poor wife looked at me in shock. She gasped out, "What???". I repeated what I said. Both of my kids jumped out of their chairs, cheered, and ran to me and hugged and kissed me, followed by my wife. I want to walk my daughter down the aisle one of these days.
